Fire in My Hood

August 2, 2005 · 5 Comments

There was a horrible fire in my neighborhood last night. The fire destroyed two Dearbought townhouses and badly damaged another. The heat from the fire was so intense that it melted and buckled the siding on a nearby row of townhouses.

I heard the sirens in my house and went out to see what was going on. Pretty much the whole neighborhood was out watching the firefighters working to put out the blaze. The official cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Thank God no one was injured, but it looks like the families lost just about everything.

The Frederick News-Post has the full story (reg req’d).

A friend who is a fire fighter said that they lost a kitty, but that was the only death.

I live across the road — it looked like they’d lose the whole row with how intense it was.

    According to the Gazette:

A press release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office said it was started by a juvenile playing with a lighter.

That is what I heard from my neighbors on Monday night but I wanted to wait until it was official.

That is so sad that they lost lost their cat.

We were wondering what was going on. I was at work and we saw the smoke, eventually hearing the fire engines. I hadn’t heard anything else - though I haven’t been paying attention to the local news feeds for a little.

It’s a shame that they lost their kitty. It’s more of a shame that something like this happened because someone was stupidly playing with a lighter.

Here is some more information from a firefighter’s blog, who was at the fire. The specific posts are here (http://knitplawithfire.typepad.com/mia/2005/08/dad_tired_but_f.html) and here (http://knitplawithfire.typepad.com/mia/2005/08/update_on_the_b.html).
