Check Out Miyako for Food and Fun

June 8, 2005 · 6 Comments

We recently went to Miyako to celebrate a friend’s birthday (happy birthday J.B.). If you haven’t been there let me tell you that the food is good and it’s fun for a large group.

You basically sit around a huge grill while your table’s chef flips shrimp into your mouths, spins eggs, and creates flaming onion volcanoes.

I had the shrimp and chicken combo, which was delicious. Each meal comes with fried or steamed rice, soup, and salad.

If you go for a birthday be prepared for the whole restaurant staff to sing to you while banging gongs and drums. The birthday boy or girl also gets a free slice of cheesecake.

It’s kind of pricey, but you get a ton of food and the entertainment is great.

My wife and I love that place! We were just there last Friday. It was a little warm, and our chef messed up the egg in the hat trick, but in all, the food was good as always. My first, and still the best experience at a Japanese hibachi steak house is was in Aberdeen Maryland, a place simply called, Japan House. Since then, my wife and I have been to many similar places, I must say, Miyako has the best salad dressing of them all.

The salad dressing was great. When I was there I tried to catch a shrimp in my mouth. It bounced off my face and landed on my friend’s shirt. The tricks aren’t always perfect but they usually are entertaining.

Oh no – pregnant wife – she can’t eat sushi, tough one, and she loves it. I’ll have to keep cafe kyoko in mind for a post pregnancy outing.

Cafe Kyoko is okay, but certainly not as good as some DC/Montgomery County favorites.

I just tried Shogun last night (on 40 towards Barbara Fritchie) and it was decent. I probably liked it a hair better than Kyoko. Next on my list is Rappungi (? on sp.). I’m told the Chinese food buffet [on right heading FROM golden mile towards downtown] on W. Patrick St. before Family Dental Associates/across from the school/before you get to the Y w/ Fox Realty & Rita’s has really good lunch time sushi, but never been (my dentist always goes there for lunch).

Terrible Customer Service and cockroaches too!
Went there for an anniversary party—a reservation for seating in the one private room they have was made for 6 pm—we were not seated until after 7 pm. Chef splashed one guest with oil and burned another with a flying shrimp. Took 15 minutes to get forks for some of the guests. The host of our party asked that they take 10% off the check for the delay in seating us—manager refused. She said that they don’t take reservations, yet when the host called to set it up, the restaurant gladly took the ‘reservation’—no mention that they don’t do that. She then said that she could take 10% off for people paying cash, but not credit cards. Then she recanted that and said she could give the 10% as gift cards, but again only for those paying cash. No way were we going back there, so we refused the gift cards. Another thing, one check had alcohol on it that wasn’t purchased by the parties involved and the manager refused to take it off the check. The manager argued every point and was not very customer friendly—she would refer to the manager (my manager won’t let me do that) and then claimed to be the manager herself. It was a disaster! The food wasn’t even that great, especially for the price we had to pay. Then, to top it off, as we were leaving the private room, we saw a cockroach crawling down the wall-YUCK!!! WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!!! If you value your time, money and health, you should never go there either!
